How Can I Prevent Teak Wood from Discoloring?

A teak lounge set not only offers a stylish look for your garden but also has the unique quality of being resistant to various weather conditions. However, without maintenance, teak will develop a silver-grey patina over time due to exposure to sun and rain. For many people, this greying is beautiful, but if you prefer to maintain the original brown color of your teak wood lounge set, there are effective ways to achieve this.

Why Does Teak Wood Discolor?

Teak wood is rich in natural oils that protect the wood against moisture and insects. These oils act as a natural barrier but are not fully resistant to UV radiation, which can affect the brown color over time. This results in the characteristic greying that teak is known for. To maintain the original color of your lounge set teak, you can use specific maintenance products and techniques.

Products to Prevent Teak Discoloration

Maintaining the warm, brown color of teak wood can easily be achieved with a teak color protector. These products are specially developed to protect the natural color of teak against UV rays and greying. Here is how you use a teak color protector:

• Step 1: Ensure the wood is completely dry and clean. Clean your teak lounge set beforehand with a mild wood cleaner and let it dry thoroughly.
• Step 2: Shake the teak color protector well and apply it evenly with a soft cloth or sponge. Always test on a small, inconspicuous part of the furniture first.
• Step 3: Let the protector soak in according to the instructions on the packaging and apply a second coat if necessary.

Maintenance Tips for Long-Lasting Color Preservation

To retain the original color of teak for longer, it is advisable to apply the color protector at least once a year, preferably at the beginning of the season. By doing this regularly, you protect the wood against sunlight and other environmental factors.

Additionally, covering the lounge set during extreme weather conditions also helps protect the wood. Although teak is well-resistant to rain, covering it can further extend the life of the color.
